What is your name & location?
We are Sahra Tohow and Ttobie Arowobusoye the founders of August Inc. here in Sydney, Australia.
How do you heal (or help heal) people?
We help heal people through community. We believe in sharing opportunities and do this by creating events for black women of african descent.
What type of benefits does your method of healing provide?
This type of healing is beneficial because it combats feelings of isolation and loneliness. Women are able to meet other people, learn self-care techniques and share experiences.
When did you realize that you wanted to heal people/why did you start?
We started August Inc. because we noticed that there was no cohesive community in Sydney for black women. Black women are here in Sydney but we were not meeting one another, spending time with one another or sharing experiences together. We are also weary about the current political landscape and felt that black women needed a space away from the scrutiny of mainstream society.
Why is what you do so important?
What we are doing is so important because our community here in Australia is small and sometimes not very visible. We want other black women to know we are here and we want them to feel safe and secure within themselves and the space they take up in Australia.
What is your inspiration to continue doing what you are doing? What is the fuel that keeps you going?
The women who are joining our community are a very large inspiration as are the black women in Sydney who are not part of our community but are looking for a community. We will be here to embrace and empower them. Hearing the appreciation and receiving feedback from women after events is heartwarming and lets us know that we are indeed filling a gap.
How does it make you feel when you are healing people?
When we are in communion with other black women it feels like we are ‘home’ as we are able to come together to share a common identity. It is very enjoyable and makes us feel like we are playing a meaningful part of creating community for black women in Sydney and beyond.
What are your visions &/or goals?
We hope to continue to grow not only in Sydney but throughout Australia. We hope to continue holding events that empower, inspire and heal black women. We also are looking at creating a directory of black owned businesses and one day we hope to hold mindfulness retreats exclusively for black women. We want to empower women now so that future generations can stand up tall and be counted while having the tools and community to ensure great mental and physical health.
In one sentence, what is your message to the world?
With self-love, self-care and empowerment Black Women are a force to be reckoned with- get with the programme or move out of our way.
Is there anything else that you would like to share about yourself or what it is that you do?
We are looking to collaborate with black women identifying people throughout Australia. We are especially interested in people who work within holistic health practices such as yoga, naturopathy etc. If you will be visiting or are already in Australia and are interested in being involved in any way please get in touch.
